EHRP is thrilled to share that Zaydee Sanchez, EHRP Fellow, has been awarded the Photojournalism Award for photo essays (up to 15 images) by the Society for Professional Journalists Northern California Chapter. The winning story and photo essay, “Pajaro’s Quest to Rebuild,” which was supported by an EHRP grant, was published in June 2023 in Mother Jones magazine. The piece explores the impact and aftermath of winter flooding in California’s Central Valley, when, overnight, a levee on the the Pajaro River broke, causing a “devastating amount of water” to flood the farming community, displacing about 1,700 residents.

Honorees will be recognized at the Society for Professional Journalists Northern California Chapter’s 38th Excellence in Journalism Awards on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at the Marines’ Memorial Club & Hotel in San Francisco.

Save An Endangered Species: Journalists

The Economic Hardship Reporting Project supports independent journalists so they can create gripping stories which often counter the typical disparaging narratives about inequality. This high-quality journalism is then co-published with mainstream media outlets mobilizing readers to address systemic economic hardship.
