Rooted in reality, written with a keen observer’s eye, and shaped with a sense of song, documentary poetry tells the truth in an artist’s voice. For generations, through wars, crisis, and political upheaval, documentary poets have helped make sense of some of our most difficult moments – by expressing what might otherwise be impossible to say. So what are they writing about today?

  • Shannon Henry Kleiber is an award-winning author, newspaper journalist and radio and podcast producer based in Madison, Wisconsin.

    Kleiber is a senior producer and interviewer for To the Best of Our Knowledge, a national public radio show from Wisconsin Public Radio and PRX. Kleiber is a former staff writer and columnist for The Washington Post, where she covered technology culture for the Business section. She has written two non-fiction books, “The Dinner Club,” about the dot com boom and bust era, and “On My Honor” about Girl Scouts of the USA founder Juliette Gordon Low.

    A three-part series from To the Best of Our Knowledge she co-executive produced, “Going for Broke,” about Americans on the edge of the economy, won first place in the 2023 National Headliner Awards for best civic/political affairs podcast. The series, created in partnership with the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, also won an EPPY from Editor & Publisher and a Gold Award from the National Association of Real Estate Editor Awards.
