From scientist to inmate: Rolling Stone cover story exposes “A Secret in the Everglades”

EHRP’S LATEST

Each week, EHRP’s original reporting appears in major nationwide publications, film festivals, and venues — amplifying the voices of independent and financially struggling journalists.

When a billionaire-backed nonprofit prioritized political influence over scientific integrity, its chief scientist resigned in protest, leading to a bitter legal battle and the scientist’s bankruptcy and incarceration. EHRP contributor Michael Adno’s sprawling investigation appears on the revered cover of Rolling Stone’s latest issue, and was also published as a one-week exclusive at Apple News.

EHRP photo series The Californians Powering America—a visual explorationof the immigrant labor sustaining our economy—continues to gain national attention.  First published by Capital & Main, the photo essay now appears in 18 publications, including LA Progressive and Times of San Diego. Created with Magnum Photos, the project features work by MacArthur Fellow Matt Black, Guggenheim Fellow Sabiha Çimen and journalist Yael Martinez. Exhibitions at two LA County Libraries—San Fernando and La Cañada Flintridge—have been extended through the end of March. Learn more here.

EHRP CONTRIBUTOR TESTIMONIAL

“Without EHRP’s financial support, I would not have been able to report this piece. EHRP’s support made thoughtful, inventive and deep reporting…not just possible but exponentially stronger. Sources like the EHRP are central to some of the best magazine journalism today, and I’m so thankful they exist. They made this among thousands of other stories possible and in turn those stories made our world bigger.”

–Michael Adno, EHRP contributor and author of “A Billionaire, a Scientist, and a Secret in the Florida Everglades” for EHRP/Rolling Stone

EHRP AWARDS

Congratulations to EHRP Reporting Fellow Elliott Woods, named a finalist for the ASME National Magazine Awards for two EHRP-supported stories covering migrant deaths in Texas, “A Deadly Passage” and “Stay Strong, My Brother,” co-published with Texas Observer and FERN. This announcement comes shortly after Woods won the George Polk Award for the same deeply reported stories.
