Garcia has said he became an advocate after being given only four paid days off to be with his dying father and his decision to take additional time off, which became even more challenging when the loss in income put him behind on bills. He became part of the campaign that passed paid leave in Colorado and now advocates for Family Values @ Work, which fosters grassroots coalitions and policy changes in areas including earned sick days, and family and medical leave insurance. Garcia also advocates for policy changes in areas including LGBTQ rights, transgender and transition health care, and mental health and suicide.
